Big Red Alert: Polls Reveal Deepening GOP Trouble Beyond the Ballot Box (Axios)
Republicans aren't only losing elections, they're consistently losing support on prices and the economy, in all polls, big or small, Republican or Democrat, over a several-month period. Five new polls this week show Republicans' problems might be even deeper and more worrisome than many fear.
Trump officials know they need to shift
this perception dramatically — and quickly. Yet big, lavish black-tie dinners with the Saudis or gold-plated White House renovations make it harder to convince voters that Trump is on the case.
There are also signs, small but noteworthy, of Republicans' rock-solid unity starting to fracture a bit — including the House revolt on the Epstein files, the Senate's refusal
to yield to Trump's demand to scrap the filibuster, which would allow simple-majority votes, and roadblocks to Trump's push for pro-GOP redistricting in Texas, Indiana, and Kansas.
Reality check: Yes,
Trump is right that he and Republicans do well when he's on the ballot. But he never will be again. And if you look at other recent elections without Trump running, you see why Republicans are panicky. More often than not, they lose, according to Axios.
Today in DC: NYC Mayor-Elect Zohran Mamdani Meets Trump at the White House for the First Time (New York Times).
After months of trading attacks, President Trump and Zohran Mamdani, the mayor-elect of New York City, will meet today at the White House at 3 PM ET.
White House officials did not say whether journalists will be allowed into the Oval Office for any part of the meeting, and neither side would say what was to be discussed. There is no shortage of potential topics, including Trump’s previous threats to send the National Guard into the city and to withhold billions of dollars in federal funding.
Dangerous Escalation: Trump Calls for Democratic Lawmakers to Face Trial, Even Death Penalty for 'Seditious Behavior' (Politico)
President Donald Trump
on Thursday called for six Democratic lawmakers to face arrest and trial after they made a video encouraging US service members and members of the intelligence community to refrain from following orders if they broke the law.
“It’s called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR
AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL,” Trump charged in a post on Truth Social. “Each one of these traitors to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL. Their words cannot be allowed to stand - We won’t have a Country anymore!!! An example MUST BE SET.”
The president then reposted 16 Truth Social posts, including one that advocated for hanging the Democrats, like “GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD.”
Court Pushback: Trump Use of Troops in Washington Likely Illegal, Judge Says (Bloomberg)
A federal judge ruled that President Trump’s deployment of National Guard troops in Washington was likely unlawful, in the latest setback to the president’s military mobilizations in Democrat-led cities.
US District Judge Jia Cobb said in a Thursday decision that the deployment of troops irreparably harmed the city’s “exercise of sovereign powers.” But she gave the federal government 21 days to appeal before the order takes effect “to prevent potential disruption to the functioning of the District and the National Guard.”
Kyiv Pushback: Ukraine and European Allies Reject Key Parts of US-Russian Plan (Bloomberg)
Kyiv’s biggest European allies lined up with President Volodymyr Zelenskiy to reject key elements of a US-Russian plan to end the war in Ukraine that would mean sweeping concessions to Vladimir Putin.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, France’s Emmanuel Macron and Keir Starmer of the UK agreed on a call with Zelenskiy on Friday that Ukraine’s armed forces must remain capable of defending its sovereignty and that the current line of contact should be the starting point for any peace talks, according to a statement from the German government.
Deadline Pressure: As Sanctions on Russian Oil Loom, India Prepares to End Its Buying Spree (New York Times)
The last supertankers filled with Russian oil bound for India left their docks in the Black Sea about four weeks ago, racing to reach their destination before today, when
US sanctions on
companies doing business with Russia’s two biggest oil firms are scheduled to take effect.
AI Bubble Concerns Return: US Stocks Slump Anew After Nvidia Results Fail to Quiet AI Angst (Bloomberg)
The S&P 500 Index slid anew, wiping out earlier gains as the relief rally following AI darling Nvidia Corp.’s surprisingly strong earnings report proved short-lived.
Labor Crosswinds: US Jobless Rate Increases to 4.4% - A Four Year High (Bloomberg)
US job growth topped expectations in September, but the unemployment rate continued its march higher, underscoring the lingering fragility of the labor market.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics' latest jobs report, long delayed due to the government shutdown, showed nonfarm payrolls rose 119,000 in the month after declining in August.
The unemployment rate, meanwhile, rose to 4.4% — its highest level in nearly four years — reflecting both the positive dynamic of more Americans participating in the workforce and the gloomier reality of more people losing their jobs.
The dated snapshot likely doesn’t change much for Federal Reserve officials, many of whom were already
leaning away
from cutting interest rates again next month. But it does illuminate the variety of cross-currents at play heading into the final months of the year.
Travel Advice: The Smartest Fliers Use This App to Survive America’s Travel Hell (Wall Street Journal)

It predicts flight delays—and explains why flights are delayed. For updates and cancellation alerts, Flighty is so fast that it often beats the airlines. The result is that people who try it become obsessed with it.
If you’re a Bloomberg Anywhere subscriber,
FLY is a great resource if you want to simply know what flights go from point A to point B on any airline. Stuck in NYC and need to go to Chicago? It will tell you the next flights out that you can try to get on. Or if planning a trip, it’s great at telling you the possible nonstops you could try, instead of getting lots of 1 or 2 stop options on other apps.
