Trump Rewrites Speech for RNC to Focus on Unity, Not Biden (Axios)

Former President Trump said Sunday the shooting at his rally has prompted him to rewrite his Republican National Convention speech so it focuses on bringing the nation together.

If this is the message he delivers, it could mean he wins in a landslide.

With the Republican National Convention kicking off this week, the Wall Street Journal writes, “The nation’s political contrast could hardly be more stark: images of a defiant and bloodied Donald Trump surviving an assassination attempt cast against persistent questions about President Biden’s mental sharpness and ability to stay in the race.

And as Peggy Noonan writes in a new column: “Mr. Trump had heard at least one shot, maybe a few. One grazed his ear. He hit the deck, was lifted up in shock, pale. He should have been swiftly rushed from the stage… He got to his feet, he didn’t wipe the blood from his face, he wanted you to see and understand the whole picture. He got his look of tough-guy fury, the one he showed for weeks walking into court in New York, the one on the mug shot. He raised that fist, pumped it, shouted ‘Fight,’ as part of the crowd began to chant ‘U.S.A.! U.S.A.!’ It was epic. Whatever you feel about him, whatever your stand, grant him one of the great gangsta moves of American political history.”

On Sunday, federal investigators said a gunman they identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, had used an AR-15 style rifle purchased by his father to open fire from a rooftop outside the rally where the former president Trump was speaking on Saturday evening. Crooks was shot and killed by Secret Service agents moments after he began firing, killing a spectator, seriously wounding two others and leaving Trump with an injury to his ear.
