US Climate: Inside Trump’s Pressure Campaign to Keep the World Hooked on Fossil Fuels (Bloomberg)
The world was on the brink of a climate milestone: adopting a global carbon tax for the shipping industry. Countries had spent years crafting the plan, hoping to throttle planet-warming pollution from cargo vessels. They had every reason to think the measure would pass when the International Maritime Organization (IMO) met in mid-October. Enter Donald Trump.
At first glance, it might look like the US has exited the climate fight. The president is once again pulling the US out of the Paris Agreement, and he may not send an official US delegation to next month’s COP30 climate summit in Brazil. But don’t be confused: America is still in the arena; it’s just fighting for the other side.
And in a perverse twist for a US president who’s decried the world’s reliance on China, other nations are increasingly linking arms with Beijing as they bid for zero-emission energy tech.
Green Spotlight on Amsterdam: Europe’s Original Climate-Resilient City Has a Lesson for Us All (Bloomberg CityLab)
Throughout its history, Amsterdam has continually reshaped its geography to adapt to changing climate and economic circumstances, showing how a city can thrive in the course of overcoming existential challenges.
Such initiatives of formidable ambition have been part of Amsterdam life since the city’s founding in the 13th century. Battling unforgiving terrain and the ever-present threat of the sea — the city lies two meters below sea level — Amsterdam has from the outset had to invest huge resources, not just to keep itself safe and dry, but to reshape the landscape and make large-scale habitation feasible.
Today, Amsterdam continues to be a leader
in climate adaptation, with a state-of-the-art canal system, entire communities built on artificial islands, and lessons for the rest of the world about overcoming existential challenges.
Weather Tracker: Hurricane Melissa Bears Down on Jamaica as a Category 5 Storm (NPR)
Hurricane Melissa intensified into a Category 5 storm Monday as it drew closer to Jamaica, where forecasters expected it to unleash catastrophic flooding, landslides and widespread damage. At that strength, it would be the strongest hurricane to hit the island since record-keeping began in 1851.
“The fingerprints of the warming climate are clearly making this horrific disaster for Jamaica, Cuba and the Bahamas even worse,” said Jennifer Francis, a senior scientist at the Woodwell Climate Research Center, as reported by the New York Times.
US-Mexico on Pause: President Sheinbaum Says US Extending Trade Deadline for Several Weeks (Bloomberg)
The US is extending a deadline to reach a trade deal with Mexico for several weeks, President Claudia Sheinbaum said, in what would be the latest reprieve Donald Trump has granted his neighbor from punishing tariffs.
Sheinbaum and Trump spoke briefly Saturday and agreed to extend talks to give the nations more time to reach a deal on non-tariff trade barriers that are still under discussion, she said during her daily press briefing Monday.
Trade Talks: EU and China to Hold Talks to Defuse Trade Spat Over Rare Earths (Bloomberg)
The European Union and China will hold talks this week to address trade disputes as Beijing’s restrictions on exports of key minerals and chips risk disrupting Europe’s auto industry.
The European Commission will receive a Chinese delegation on Thursday to discuss rare earth restrictions, which sounded alarm bells among governments and firms across the bloc.
