'TACO' Tuesday: Trump’s White House Launches a Victory Lap Before Two-Week Ceasefire with Iran Begins (Politico Playbook)
What difference a day makes: “A big day for World Peace!” Trump trumpeted on Truth Social at 12:01 a.m., a mere 16 hours after threatening to erase an entire civilization off the face of the planet. Iran has “had enough” of war, Trump said, and “so has everyone else,” Politico Playbook writes.
“There will be lots of positive action!” Trump predicted. “Big money will be made. Iran can start the reconstruction process … This could be the Golden Age of the Middle East!!!” You don’t need to read too far past the hyperbole to get the crucial point: “Two-week” ceasefire or no, Trump is already moving on.
And let’s be clear: Given the unpopularity of this war in America, the devastating impact on oil prices, the rapidly worsening global economic outlook and Trump’s looming May 14 summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, it’s hard to imagine Trump reviving his bombing campaign. Oil prices have already plummeted below $100 a barrel following the ceasefire announcement. Stock markets are surging. He’s not going to want to go back, Playbook writes.
So brace yourselves for the White House comms blitz. Your zone is about to be flooded with Trump world messages that America won the war, even before this two-week negotiation gets underway. This is “total and complete victory,” Trump told the AFP last night. “100 percent. No question about it.”
And watch the surrogates follow: Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth will hold a news conference at 8 a.m. to explain how America’s military goals have been achieved. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt will deliver the same message at a press briefing at 1 p.m. “This is a victory for the United States,” Leavitt said unequivocally on X.
We’re unlikely to see any “Mission Accomplished” banners, but the message from the White House is clear, according to Playbook.
Global Fracture: Trump’s Iran War Leaves the US Looking Weakened to Adversaries (Bloomberg)
The ceasefire in Iran has reinforced views among both adversaries and the NATO alliance that Trump’s campaign against the Tehran regime marks a strategic setback, bolstering China and Russia while squandering American strengths.
While Moscow and Beijing fear US military and intelligence superiority, they have seen it couldn’t force Iran’s capitulation. The tensions in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, which culminated in Trump threatening to leave the alliance, have left lasting doubts over his commitment to its defense.
The two-week ceasefire, mediated by Pakistan, will also dent Trump’s credibility as a negotiator and likely further deter Russian President Vladimir Putin from making concessions in Ukraine.

Pre-Election Clash: JD Vance Slams Brussels ‘Bureaucrats’ for Meddling in Hungary Before Election (Politico)
US Vice President JD Vance on Tuesday insisted that Brussels rather than Washington was interfering in Hungarian politics before a crunch election on April 12, which will decide the future of key MAGA ally Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
Vance’s criticism of the EU came amid a full-throated endorsement of Orbán, although he denied he was trying to boost the flagging campaign of the Kremlin-aligned leader, who has run Hungary for the past 16 years.
On stage at a rally for Orbán Tuesday, Vance phoned Trump. “I am big fan of Viktor,” Trump announced, praising Orbán as “a fantastic man,” who “did not allow people to storm your country and invade your country like the people have and ruined other countries.”
“We have to get Orbán re-elected as prime minister of Hungary, don’t we?” Vance told the supporters of the governing Fidesz party, to rapturous applause.
In backing Orbán, the White House is
“going out of their way to help a leader in Europe who has a foreign policy that’s the most at odds with American interests”, said Thomas Wright, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, the Financial Times reported.

Live from Space: NASA’s Breathtaking Photos From Far Side of the Moon Evoke Wonder and Awe (Bloomberg)
The crew of NASA’s Artemis II mission has already cemented its place in the history books by smashing space distance records and notching a number of spaceflight firsts on its journey around the moon.
NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen can also claim another impressive title: skilled photographers. The Artemis II astronauts have been capturing breathtaking images of the Earth and the moon as they travel out to a distance of about 252,760 miles from our planet.
